Cultivate, Foster, and Expand: Spring Forward With AMSN’s Goals

Cultivate, Foster, and Expand: Spring Forward With AMSN’s Goals

By Dr. Kristi Reguin-Hartman, DNP, APRN, ACNS-BC

Dear AMSN Members,

As we embrace the opportunities of 2025, I am inspired by our medical-surgical nursing community. Together, we are advancing AMSN’s mission to support and empower medical-surgical nurses through professional development, advocacy, and innovation. This past week was AMSN’s Spring Board of Directors meeting. The directors on the board are nurse volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds and states across the country. Their years in medical-surgical nursing span from two to more than 30 years! These nurses volunteer their time and energy to make sure the work of AMSN is strategic, effective, and impactful. They are also an incredible amount of fun to be with! Read more about them on the AMSN website.

While meeting, we reviewed the progress made in 2024 and set focus on our goals for 2025. The 2025-2027 strategic plan guides AMSN’s work with three key purposes: Cultivate Community, Foster Educational Excellence, and Expand Reach and Influence.

Cultivating Community is at the heart of AMSN. We aim to strengthen the identity of medical-surgical nurses and foster inclusivity within our organization. By serving as a lifelong professional home, we’re building a dynamic and engaged community that celebrates diversity and promotes a strong professional identity. A new online community, called The Huddle, will be released this spring to provide a place to share insights and innovations with each other. Last year we inducted the first cohort of AMSN Fellows, and the application for the 2025 FAMSN class is open now! I hope you consider applying or recommending it to someone you know.

In pursuit of Educational Excellence, AMSN is committed to positioning itself as the leading destination for innovative and engaging education. From launching resources like the updated Scope and Standards of Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice and new recommendations on safe staffing for medical-surgical nurses, we are equipping nurses with tools to excel in their roles. And I hope you look for new (have you listened to the AMSN Med-Surg Moments podcast with continuing education credits for members yet?) and exciting (convention in Austin is going to be HUGE!) ways to earn continuing education!

Finally, Expanding Our Reach and Influence underscores our ambition to amplify AMSN’s voice in healthcare. This includes initiatives like revitalizing chapters, hosting legislative events, and expanding recognition programs including the PRISM® Award. By strengthening advocacy efforts, forming strategic partnerships with other nursing organizations and companies, and increasing our visibility, we strengthen our position as an essential thought leader in nursing practice.

I am confident that our work in the next two years will drive meaningful progress toward our goals and in support of advancing the largest nursing specialty, medical-surgical nursing!

Wishing you a wildly bright and sunny spring. As always, reach out at president@amsn.org!

Kristi
