Certification

CERTIFICATION ASSISTANCE: Certification@amsn.org

As the global impact of COVID-19 continues to unfold, MSNCB's testing partner, Prometric, has deemed the CMSRN certification exam "essential." Various testing centers in the United States and other countries are reopening on a weekly basis at either limited or full capacity and are supporting "essential" exams. Although test centers are reopening weekly, we are also seeing test centers close in COVID-19 hot spots. Check here for test site availability in your area.

Test centers are requiring test takers to bring and wear a mask while taking the exam. This is necessary to comply with federal guidance provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as to further protect the health and well-being of the individual test takers and the staff that provide services.

MSNCB now offers remote proctored exams. Due to COVID-19, remote proctored exams are in high demand. Plan to be available for up to 5 hours to allow for check-in, the wait to be connected to a proctor, taking the exam and troubleshooting any technical difficulties that may arise where you will need to contact support. It's important to check your device for compatibility by running a system readiness check and reviewing the FAQ and other common technical issues that may arise while testing. This will assist you in determining if a remote proctored exam is right for you.

As of August 3, 2020, rescheduling fees and extension fees have been reinstated. Please review the website for more information.

Late fees for certification renewal applications have been waived through December 31, 2020.

Advocacy

ADVOCACY ASSISTANCE: Advocacy@amsn.org

COVID-19 is changing all our lives and work. To support our patients and our safety while providing care, our medical-surgical nursing voices are needed now in our national and state capitals. Please contact your federal and state legislators today, and tell them to prioritize COVID-19 testing, personal protective equipment (PPE), and funding for childcare so we can all care for our patients and protect our safety.

How Else Can We Help?

The team at our national office is working virtually to contribute to social distancing and efforts to "flatten the curve" as much as we can. Though we are not together at the office, we continue to work collaboratively to provide the support and resources you need. Regardless of where we are working, we have processes in place to ensure we can provide the same level of customer service and overall attention that you expect from AMSN.

We do not yet know when this crisis will abate. We do know that health care organizations – the people and the infrastructures – are being stretched near their limits. We do know that many of you will be working day and night amidst the uncertainty and stress, while risking your own well-being caring for those impacted by COVID-19. You may also find yourself separated from family and friends.

We are grateful for the work you do, and we are committed to making it easier for you to do your work.

If there is anything you need, or you have suggestions on how we can better serve you during this time, please do not hesitate to reach out to us immediately.

Sincerely,
The Boards of Directors and Staff of AMSN/MSNCB

PAPERS, GUIDES & PUBLICATIONS

A Nurse's Ethical Obligation During a Pandemic
A timely article from a 2017 issue of MedSurg Matters!, Dr. Casey Cassidy outlines ethical and legal considerations during a pandemic and describes a nurse's professional duty during such events in her article "A Nurse’s Ethical Obligation During a Pandemic."

We hope this provides you with additional guidance at this time. Please note that the contact hours for this article have expired. Read the article.

AMSN Past President and Current Research Advisor Linda Yoder PhD, MBA, RN, AOCN, FAAN and colleagues developed a paper, “Global health crises are also information crises: A call to action.” Using as an example the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) epidemic, they examine challenges associated with what we term “global information crises”; recommend changes needed for the field of information science to play a leading role in such crises; and propose actionable items for short‐ and long‐term research, education, and practice in information science. View paper in its entirety.

Managing COVID-19 ARDS
Patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19 pneumonia often go on to develop acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and some will develop adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) (Auwaerter, 2020).
