We asked the AMSN Members why and how they celebrate Med-Surg Nurses Week. Here's what member Lori Magestro, DNP, RN, MEDSURG-BC, had to say about her love for medical-surgical nursing:
AMSN: What do you love most about being a medical-surgical nurse?
Lori Magestro, DNP, RN, MEDSURG-BC (LM): I love the variety and diversity of patient care experiences. Since medical-surgical units serve patients with a wide range of conditions, from post-op care to acute and chronic illness, nurses are able to develop many skills within the science of the profession and the art of caring. This variety keeps the work dynamic and offers continuous learning opportunities. I also love the relationships I have established with the patients, healthcare team members, and especially other medical-surgical nurses.
AMSN: What encouragement/message do you have for the AMSN community celebrating Med-Surg Nurses Week this year?
LM: To all medical-surgical nurses and future nurses: Happy Medical-Surgical Nurses Week! You are the quarterback of the healthcare team on your medical-surgical unit. Your versatility, clinical expertise, and clinical judgement make a tremendous difference, impacting the lives of those you serve. This week, we celebrate you — for your dedication to your patients, commitment to the specialty of medical-surgical nursing, and your resilience. Keep shining — you are truly making the world a healthier place!
