Where Were You in 1991? Celebrating Growth and Milestones With AMSN

Where Were You in 1991? Celebrating Growth and Milestones With AMSN

By Dr. Kristi Reguin-Hartman, DNP, APRN, ACNS-BC

"Where were you 35 years ago?"

There’s a popular trend circulating online asking, “Where were you 35 years ago?” Well … in 1991, I wasn’t yet a nurse, or even out of high school (and no, I couldn’t find a picture to show you 😉, and please don’t ask my mom).

Now, AMSN did not start this viral trend, but we are pretty excited that it is hitting right now!

Because AMSN is celebrating big this year — our 35th Anniversary! This milestone reminds us of where we started, how far we’ve come, and all the people who made this possible. If you’ve been following our podcast, you might recall an episode last year featuring Alice Poyss, one of AMSN’s early presidents. If you haven’t listened yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a heartwarming origin story filled with perseverance and intrigue and support for our specialty.

Ep. 151 - The AMSN Story With Co-Founder Alice Poyss

About the Episode

A cinematic journey into the story of AMSN's humble beginnings with AMSN Co-Founder Alice Poyss. Join Alice along with special guest co-host AMSN President Kristi Reguin-Hartman and the co-hosts as they journey back in time to Philadelphia in 1990. PLUS a very important opening message every medical-surgical nurse must hear...

Thirty-five years ago, AMSN was just beginning to take shape. What started as a vision to support medical-surgical nurses has now grown into an incredible organization representing and uplifting nurses across the country and beyond. That is our story of growth — and it’s one I’m so proud to celebrate with you all this year in Palm Springs at our convention! I have seen the speaker line-up, and it is big-time exceptional! We will engage in meaningful discussions about nursing innovation and gain valuable perspectives on maintaining a healthy workforce.

Speaking of growth, I’ve included a picture of my newest side quest: “Project Salsa Garden.” Watching these tiny plants settle in to grow (hopefully!) reminds me that everything we do starts small — with intention, care, and the hope for something meaningful and sometimes delicious!

(Meet my plants: Cherry, front left; Berry, back left; Gary, in the middle; Portia, front right; and Bertha, back right)

Whether it’s a bed of tiny plants turning toward the sun or a professional organization celebrating 35 years of impact, I’m reminded that what we nurture can thrive.

April also brings National Volunteer Week, celebrated April 19–25, 2026, and I could not let this message pass without shining a light on the backbone of AMSN — our amazing volunteers. AMSN is successful only because of our wildly dedicated, brilliantly talented nurse volunteers who give their time, expertise, and thought leadership to this organization. From committees and task forces to our truly exceptional AMSN Board of Directors, each of you plays a vital role. I am deeply grateful for you and the energy you bring to medical-surgical nursing.

And as Volunteer Week wraps and guides us into National Nurses Week (May 6–12, 2026), I hope you take time to celebrate yourself and your colleagues. AMSN has wonderful resources and ideas for honoring Nurses Week — consider exploring them to help make your celebration special.

Thank you for being part of AMSN’s continued growth and purpose.

As always, reach out at President@amsn.org.

Warmly,

Kristi
