Our Profession Moves Forward When We Do

Our Profession Moves Forward When We Do

By Courtney Lykins, MSN, RN, CMSRN, NPD-BC

As summer begins to wind down, many of us find ourselves preparing for a season of new beginnings. Children are heading back to school, calendars are filling up, and routines that may have relaxed over the summer months begin to take shape once again.

There is something energizing about this time of year. Even for those of us long past our school days, August often feels like a fresh start. It is a chance to reset goals, refocus our energy, and recommit to personal and professional growth.

As medical-surgical nurses, lifelong learning is at the heart of what we do. Whether you are preparing for certification, maintaining your credentials, mentoring a colleague, pursuing a new role, or simply looking for ways to grow within your practice, this season offers an opportunity to invest in yourself and your future.

One of the greatest ways we grow as nurses is through connection. We learn from conversations that challenge us, ideas that broaden our perspectives, and shared experiences that remind us why we chose this profession. Those moments of connection not only strengthen our individual practice but also move our specialty forward.

The upcoming 2026 AMSN Convention in Palm Springs is full of those opportunities. Sessions led by medical-surgical nursing leaders will create a space where inspiration meets action and the full picture of med-surg nursing is celebrated. From quality of care and patient outcomes to nurse well-being, complex patient needs, leadership, and professional development, the convention reflects the many dimensions of our specialty. It is a reminder that medical-surgical nursing is multifaceted, demanding, impactful, and worthy of continued investment.

Whether you are attending to earn continuing education, explore new ideas, connect with colleagues, or simply recharge your professional passion, this conference offers something for everyone. AMSN and MSNCB share a common vision: to strengthen the medical-surgical nursing profession by investing in the nurses who drive it forward. By bringing together professional membership, education, networking, and specialty certification, we help create pathways for nurses to advance their practice, strengthen our specialty, and improve outcomes for the patients we serve.

If you're looking for a place to grow, connect, and elevate your practice, this is it! Our profession moves forward when we do.

If you'll be attending the AMSN Convention, I hope you'll stop by the exhibit hall and connect with the MSNCB Board of Directors and team. I'd love the opportunity to meet you, hear your stories, and learn how certification has influenced your professional journey!

As we close out summer and look ahead to the opportunities that fall will bring, I want to personally thank you for your continued dedication to your patients, your colleagues, and our profession.

I hope to see you in Palm Springs!
