Embracing Change and Cultivating Growth

Embracing Change and Cultivating Growth

By Matt Fenwick, MBA

The only constant in life is change. We've all heard this quote, and many will likely try to embrace it. Recently, though, I've given a lot of thought to change versus growth. Growth is change, too, but growth is positive, often self-directed, and shapes us into the future person we hope to become. Although it is never as cleanly accomplished or as fast as we would prefer, the thought of growth has helped me appreciate our work as an association and, more importantly, the work of the medical-surgical nurses we represent. We exist for you and to advance your work.

The healthcare field is changing, and the role of medical-surgical nurses is changing. Life post-COVID has accelerated all of this. But take a moment to reflect on your life and the multitude of changes taking place. It's a lot, right? However, are these changes directed by you? Are they positive, or are they just happening to you, outside your control? Control is hard to come by; at least, it feels like it too often. A focus on your personal growth can give you some control back.

While I can't guarantee that AMSN will revolutionize your life, I can assure you that professional growth through AMSN membership or certification — such as the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) or the upcoming Certified Acute-Care Virtual Registered Nurse (CAVRN) credential — can enhance your career and life. This is not an overstatement but a promise of the opportunities that await you.

AMSN membership is more than just a professional affiliation. It's a gateway to a supportive community. Many of our board members, volunteers, and chapter leaders have formed lasting friendships through AMSN. Membership also offers you access to valuable education and connections that can propel your career. And let's remember the fun! Join us at the AMSN Annual Convention in Toronto, Sept. 12–14, for top-notch medical-surgical nursing education, and stay for the social events and inspiring keynotes. AMSN is here to fill your cup and provide the tools you need to excel in your nursing career.

As the healthcare field evolves, you don't have to face it alone. With 10,000 AMSN members and 40,000 medical-surgical nurses with the CMSRN distinction, we are a large yet close-knit community that actively adapts to the ever-changing clinical aspects of our roles. You chose to be a medical-surgical nurse for the challenge and the opportunity to improve patients' lives. Let us support your growth and navigate the changing healthcare world together!
