Med-Surg Nurses Week Spotlight: Patricia Bartzak

Med-Surg Nurses Week Spotlight: Patricia Bartzak

By Patricia Bartzak, DNP, RN, CMSRN, TCRN, CNRN

We asked the AMSN Board of Directors to share their thoughts about their passion for medical-surgical nursing. Here’s what AMSN Secretary Patricia Bartzak, DNP, RN, CMSRN, TCRN, CNRN, had to say:

AMSN: What does medical-surgical nursing mean to you?

Patricia Bartzak, DNP, RN, CMSRN, TCRN, CNRN (PB): I continue to practice as a staff nurse at a Level 1 trauma center in Massachusetts. Over the past two decades, I have provided direct patient care to a variety of patients who have required differing levels of care from medical-surgical to intensive care settings. My practice foundation is rooted in medical-surgical nursing characterized by a broad base of knowledge, critical thinking, patient-focus, best practices, and teamwork. It is a privilege to care for patients who are at their most vulnerable and offer advocacy and caring.

AMSN: What do you love most about being a medical-surgical nurse?

PB: I like medical-surgical nursing because it is universal and specific at the same time. Medical-surgical nursing is foundational and is a nursing specialty unto itself. Medical-surgical nurses are versatile by utilizing a wide knowledge base and holistic approach to provide care with multidisciplinary partners. Every caring moment provides a learning opportunity. In my experience, the medical-surgical nurse provides an important human touch to all aspects of patient care.

AMSN: What encouragement/message do you have for the AMSN community celebrating Med-Surg Nurses Week this year?

PB: Even when accolades and visible appreciation may be understated, honor your path to becoming a medical-surgical nurse and keep your internal compass close. You know what you do to ease another’s concerns, anxiety and suffering. You know your skill and worth. Let your internal light shine to others as you continue the essential work of medical-surgical nursing. Remember the privilege of caring for others and be sure to celebrate and support yourselves and your colleagues!
