The current bowel preparation practice for hospitalized, elderly patients with cognitive impairment and/or dementia admitted in an inpatient setting undergoing colonoscopy can be challenging, especially with the use of high-volume bowel prep administered nocturnally. These circumstances pose clinical and safety risks as well as ethical concerns. This Evidenced-based Practice (EBP) Project is focused on exploring the best practices for bowel preparation protocols for this vulnerable population undergoing colonoscopy while delivering comprehensive interdisciplinary care to address their unique needs.

A peaceful death is desired by all of us — not only for ourselves, but for our families and the patients entrusted with our care.  And while as nurses we understand that caring for the dying comes with our roles, most of us had limited academic preparation for this physical, spiritual and emotional process. The goal of this program is to share both foundational as well as current guidelines that encompass symptom management and the alleviation of actual or perceived suffering and to offer the audience evidence-based tools to bring into their own practice.

To address hypoglycemia risks and improve patient care on an intermediate care unit, a structured post-hypoglycemia debrief was introduced. This initiative creates a collaborative environment where providers  analyze hypoglycemic incidents in real-time, discuss contributing factors, and identify effective interventions. By  integrating this practice, the healthcare team can enhances their awareness and improves diabetes management,  thereby ensuring greater patient safety.

This session will provide an overview of the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative and the 4Ms of Geriatric best practices-- what Matters, Mobility, Mentation, and Medications. The session will describe improved quality outcomes at a large academic teaching hospital, when inpatient care included pieces of all 4Ms. The goal of this session is to demonstrate that starting small-scale improvement work can add up to significantly improved outcomes for those most vulnerable hospitalized older adults.

V109: Multitasking Mayhem: Priority Pursuit

This session explores a simulation-based approach designed to strengthen time management and prioritization skills among nurse residents in a medical-surgical setting. Participants engage in a high-fidelity scenario with a complex patient, facing gamified distractions that require multitasking, delegation, and effective communication-mirroring the dynamic environment of a med/surg unit. The simulation, grounded in adult learning theory and Benner’s Novice-to-Expert framework, fosters critical thinking and teamwork while providing a safe space for experiential learning. Evaluations indicate that the experience significantly enhances residents’ confidence and competence in managing competing priorities and making timely clinical decision.

Improving the care of health system elders has garnered significant attention with innovative research that focuses on a person’s essential needs to ensure their physical and psychosocial well-being needs are met. In particular, the fundamentals of care framework provides (Weeks, 2024) support for the advancement of knowledge and outcomes for evidence-based practice and quality improvement. However, an aspect that remains unexplored is the impact of fundamentals of care on health system elders in regards to length of stay at a critical access hospital.

V111: The Journey of An Accredited Multi-State Medical Surgical RN Residency Program

This session will take learners on the journey of a large health system's implementation, maintenance, and accreditation of a Medical Surgical Nurse Residency program.  Session attendees will learn how to program is structured, including a topic outline and sample class activities. Outcome measures will be described as well as strategies for maintaining program consistency across several hospitals.

Group Rates

AMSN is pleased to offer group registration for those who are looking to have multiple nurses or providers from one facility attend the in-person AMSN Convention or Virtual Convention Extension. Group registration is available for groups of three or more and offers a discount of 10% off each registration. Please note that the group discount cannot be combined with any other registration discount and cannot be applied retroactively. To qualify, all registrations must meet the below qualifications and be submitted together in a group registration via the online registration form. Please email registration@amsn.org to receive your group discount code prior to registering.

Group Registration Qualifications:

  • Group discounts only apply to three or more full conference registrations from the same facility.
  • Payment for all registrants must be on one check or credit card.
  • A combination of AMSN members and non-members is acceptable, as long as they all are from the same institution. If you are registering a group of members and non-members please reach out to registration@amsn.org for more information on receiving this discount.
  • Discounts apply to conference registration ONLY and exclude pre-conference sessions, spouse/guest passes, and one day passes.

Should registrants need to cancel registration before the cancellation deadline or the total remaining number of group registrants falls below three, each will be invoiced for the regular full conference rate and must pay the outstanding balance in order to receive registration materials on-site.

The group discount is applicable for in-person AMSN Convention registrants who add the Virtual Convention Extension as an add-on to their registration.
