Med-Surg Nurses Week Spotlight: Marie Mullins

We asked the AMSN Board of Directors to share with us about their passion for medical-surgical nursing. Here’s what Emerging Professional Marie Mullins, BSN, RN, CMSRN, had to say:

AMSN: What does medical-surgical nursing mean to you?  

Marie Mullins, BSN, RN, CMSRN (MM): Medical-surgical nursing represents the very heart of healthcare, where versatility, skill, and compassion come together to provide comprehensive care for patients with diverse medical needs. It’s about being adaptable, knowledgeable, and ever ready to handle a wide range of conditions while continuously advocating for patient safety and well-being. To me, medical-surgical nursing embodies the balance between the art and science of nursing — it’s the foundation upon which we build critical thinking, holistic patient care, and lifelong learning. It’s a specialty that requires resilience, quick decision-making, and the ability to juggle complex care plans, always with the goal of improving patient outcomes and enhancing their experience.

AMSN: What do you love most about being a medical-surgical nurse?  

MM: What I love most about being a medical-surgical nurse is the dynamic nature of the work. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to learn, grow, and make a difference in the lives of a wide variety of patients. The constant flow of different cases — ranging from post-operative care to managing chronic illnesses — keeps me engaged and ensures that I’m always honing my clinical skills. But beyond the clinical aspect, it’s the deep connection I form with my patients and their families that I find most rewarding. Being there for them during vulnerable times, advocating for their care, and witnessing their recovery brings me an unparalleled sense of fulfillment.

AMSN: What encouragement/message do you have for the AMSN community celebrating Med-Surg Nurses Week this year?

MM: To the incredible medical-surgical nurses across the AMSN community, I want to express my heartfelt admiration for your tireless dedication and resilience. As we celebrate Med-Surg Nurses Week, take a moment to reflect on the profound impact you make every day — not only in the lives of your patients but also in shaping the future of healthcare. Your commitment to patient care, your adaptability in the face of ever-changing circumstances, and your pursuit of excellence are truly inspiring. Continue to embrace the challenges, lean into collaboration, and never stop advocating for yourself, your patients, and your profession.
